In Karns, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this field, with numerous testing centers nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or the body is required. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing protocols. Many employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair testing over the standard urine test. This is particularly true for employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The significant advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection time for drug use—up to 90 days—alongside the secure collection process, making it nearly impossible to cheat. However, urine tests remain more accurate for identifying recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for detecting substance and alcohol ingestion. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and substance exposure by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When procured near the scalp, hair can reveal an estimated 3-month timeframe for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional examinations, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically denotes scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory approach to processing a drug test result encapsulates four critical phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the introductory handling of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assessment for illicit substances. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method for dismissing substance use in the majority of samples, a positive screening needs confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening require a confirmatory analysis.

If a specimen is detected as positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is collected from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing a challenging process.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens are cleaned before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analyses can track drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter window.
  • Challenging to falsify: The accuracy of hair drug tests is enhanced by the difficulty to manipulate results.
  • Displays historical consumption: It offers an overview of drug intake over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the test assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
