Accredited Drug Testing expertly provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Lakesite, Tennessee. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair testing services, with facilities across all cities nationwide ready to conduct the assessment. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp hair, but body hair can sometimes be used. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing requests.

In recent times, employing a hair follicle drug test for drug screening has become increasingly prevalent. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine assessments. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary figures often use hair follicle tests. This test's primary advantage is its extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, rendering evasion nearly impossible. However, for assessing drug use within the preceding five days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an efficient method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of substances by locking biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hairs (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal specimen for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It’s suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When we use the term head hair, it refers strictly to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process to derive a drug test outcome involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody procedure.

Screening provides an initial rapid evaluation for substances of misuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug intake in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that indicate a positive result during Screening need additional confirmation.

When a sample is indicated as positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are obtained from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive results are washed before verification as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated based on both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the qualification to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly difficult, ensuring the results are more precise.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a consistent pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Substances require 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lakesite, TN, the advantages of hair follicle tests over traditional urine analyses are clear. They boast superior detection capabilities, with a longer detection period and greater accuracy, minimizing the potential for evasion while offering a fuller picture of substance use.

The hair test's capacity to detect drug consumption over an extended period is imperative for employers seeking reliability in drug policy enforcement, making it a more favorable option compared to urine testing for comprehensive assessments.

Extended Detection Window

In Lakesite, TN, one of the most compelling features of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. It can trace drug use spanning up to 90 days, offering employers a detailed history of substance habits over time, which is invaluable for informed decision-making.

Employers leveraging this method gain access to a broader overview of an individual's substance use, ensuring that past behavior is accounted for, providing peace of mind in candidate evaluations and ongoing employee monitoring.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Lakesite, TN, offers a tamper-resistant alternative to drug testing, significantly minimizing the risk of sample adulteration common with other methods. This reliability ensures that results are beyond reproach.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
