Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Lantana, Tennessee. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is required, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert, with testing centers across all US cities offering hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair can be used. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG or tailored hair testing solutions.

Lately, the preference for hair follicle drug testing has increased. This method is now regularly adopted by employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals as an alternative to the common urine test. Hair follicle drug screenings are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, as well as for individuals on probation. The major advantage is its extended detection period for drug use, which can be up to 90 days. It's also collected through an observed process and is very difficult to tamper with. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test is still considered the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing around 200 strands of hair (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. Head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial introduction of a sample into a lab's system. This process includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplemental data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples that return presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and set for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Validation of any positive screening results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a reduced detection span.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Delivers past usage data: It offers a pattern of drug consumption over a duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variance in findings: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Even though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
