In Lenox, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is supported by our extensive network of testing centers across all U.S. cities, ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required for testing, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other specific hair testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common choice for drug screening. Entities such as employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle testing caters to employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationers. A significant advantage is its extended detection period, revealing drug use up to 90 days prior, through an observed collection method that is extremely difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, for use within the past five days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and substance use by retaining biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When extracted near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transport is convenient.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It’s recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a specimen into a lab’s framework. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any further data entry not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach for negating drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court acceptance. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is found presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage trends: It can reveal a usage pattern over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being often called "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lenox, TN, hair follicle testing is proving superior to traditional urine testing. Hair tests boast a longer detection window, offering insights into drug use over the past 90 days, whereas urine tests are limited to recent use. This extensive coverage helps employers enforce strict drug policies effectively.

Moreover, hair tests are highly reliable and hard to cheat, providing accurate results consistently. Unlike urine samples, which can be manipulated, hair tests deliver trustworthy outcomes, essential for maintaining safety and compliance in the workplace. Lenox employers find their detection accuracy indispensable.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle test's impressive detection window is a key advantage. In Lenox, TN, this testing method can uncover drug use habits over a span of 90 days, offering employers a comprehensive timeline of an individual's substance use history. Such extended detection provides a clearer understanding of potential risks.

This wide-ranging insight allows employers to make informed decisions when evaluating applicants or monitoring current employees. The capacity to analyze an extended period ensures employers in Lenox get a full scope of an individual's drug history, fostering safe work environments through informed judgments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

A significant benefit of hair follicle testing in Lenox, TN, is its resistance to tampering. The collection and analysis process are conducted under observation, making it challenging to alter or compromise samples. This ensures a high level of trust in the test results.

Due to the stringent process, hair tests provide indisputable results, which are critical in upholding stringent drug policies. Employers who prioritize secure and reliable drug testing methods favor hair follicle testing, knowing it significantly minimizes risks associated with sample adulteration.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
