Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lone Oak, Tennessee. Should you require a drug or alcohol analysis via hair testing, we are experts in this field with facilities available nationwide to administer such tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is typically needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years as an alternative to traditional methods. This type of testing is favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists who prioritize accuracy and reliability. A significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, making it difficult to tamper with. However, a urine test remains more accurate for identifying drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a vital method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by ensnaring biomarkers in the strands' fibers as they grow. Assuming hair is collected close to the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resilient to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (almost the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the essential amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding ten panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, it refers only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow for processing a drug test result primarily involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes confirming whether the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary examination for controlled substances. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screen must receive confirmation to be valid in court. Samples implying positive results during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For a sample that appears positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging to conduct.

To confirm any positive screening outcome, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used. All samples with presumptive positives are washed as necessary before confirmation. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug testing can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug use, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in results: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over traditional urine testing methods. In Lone Oak, TN, this approach provides superior detection capabilities, identifying substance use over an extended period much more effectively. The increased accuracy and reliability of hair testing make it a preferred choice for employers seeking to enforce zero-tolerance policies.

Unlike urine tests, which can only briefly indicate drug use, hair follicle testing examines a more extended timeframe, painting a clearer picture of an individual's history. Employers value the consistency and thoroughness of hair testing compared to urine analysis and its reduced susceptibility to tampering and false negatives.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Lone Oak, TN, benefit from the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing, capturing substance history for up to 90 days. This comprehensive view allows for more informed assessments of potential and current employees, ensuring workplace safety and compliance with drug-free policies.

Unlike standard urine tests, hair follicle testing provides an extended overview of an individual's drug use, covering a 90-day span. This broad timeframe is particularly beneficial for employers needing to understand more about an applicant's or employee's long-term behavior rather than just their recent substance habits.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are a tamper-resistant method that significantly reduces the risks of sample adulteration, offering reliable results to the residents of Lone Oak, TN. Unlike urine tests, which might be altered, hair tests provide a robust defense against manipulation, ensuring the integrity of the process and results.

This testing process offers a secure and unbeatable method to ensure accurate results. The inherent difficulty in tampering with hair samples grants Lone Oak employers confidence in the test's veracity, facilitating adherence to compliance and safety standards in workplace environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
