Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Louisville, Tennessee. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our facilities across the nation are equipped to conduct reliable hair tests. Most individuals need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, although body hair might also be suitable. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options to meet specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred drug testing method over traditional urine tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests for their reliability and longer detection window. Hair follicle tests provide a longer detection period, capturing up to 90 days of drug use history, are collected under supervision, and are difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most precise choice for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands, hair documents a comprehensive history of substance use. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal alcohol and drug use over a period of up to three months. It's straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A length of hair measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (the width of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields about 100mg, ideal for preliminary screening and validation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those surpassing 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties, such as facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory assessment for drug tests are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the foundational step where a sample enters the lab system. This phase ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns it a distinct LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not captured by an electronic custody system.

In the Screening phase, a rapid test for drugs of abuse is conducted. While cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive Screening result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples indicating a potential positive in Screening need additional verification.

For samples flagged as positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This step isolates drugs from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening especially challenging.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo a wash before confirmation as necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is carefully reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Gives historical insights: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, rather than only recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", analysis is conducted on the hair strand—not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Louisville, TN, hair follicle testing is unmatched in outperforming traditional urine tests. It offers superior detection accuracy, making it ideal for pinpointing substance use. Hair tests are more reliable, capturing a detailed drug use profile over an extended period.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
