Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair drug testing solutions in Mason, Tennessee. Whether you require a drug or alcohol test involving hair, our expertise lies in hair analysis. We have facilities nationwide, all equipped to conduct these tests. The requirement is generally 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific needs.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests has risen recently, with many workplaces, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals opting for it over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation departments frequently utilize hair drug testing. Its major advantage is the extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, providing accuracy difficult to circumvent. Yet for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain highly reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly perceived as an effective method for uncovering the consumption of substances like drugs and alcohol. Hair encases biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, offering a historical substance usage timeline. When taken near the scalp, it grants a detection reach of up to 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tough to alter, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 hair strands, about a #2 pencil's thickness, from adjacent to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable volume of body hair can be utilized. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab's system. It involves ensuring the sample's seal and shipment were correct, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further data input not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening economically excludes drug usage across most samples, any screen yielding positive results necessitates confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a specimen exhibit presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration considerably lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), emphasizing the complexity of hair drug screening.

The Confirmation process for positive screening results uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation, as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can uncover drug use over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests, which have a lesser detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Tampering with a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insights: It provides a record of drug use habits over a duration, not merely recent indulgence.

Limitations:

  • Undetectable for recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth variability can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: It's commonly called a "hair follicle test", but it evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When considering drug testing methods in Mason, TN, hair follicle testing stands out against traditional urine tests. Unlike urine tests, hair tests have a superior rate of detection accuracy, identifying patterns of substance abuse over an extended time.

Hair tests virtually eliminate the possibility of tampering and provide a reliable picture of an individual's drug history, making them a preferred choice for organizations aiming for thoroughness in drug detection.

Extended Detection Window

The extended window of detection up to 90 days is what sets hair follicle testing apart in Mason, TN. This long detection period offers comprehensive insight into an individual’s drug habits over the past three months.

This aspect is crucial for employers who want a detailed look at an applicant’s or employee’s drug history, allowing them to make informed employment decisions with confidence.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are designed to resist tampering, a key advantage in Mason, TN. Unlike other methods, altering a hair sample is extremely difficult, providing an additional layer of security and integrity to the testing process.

With hair testing, the risk of adulteration is minimized, ensuring the results are a true reflection of the individual’s drug use. This reliability is crucial for entities that need unquestionable evidence in substance abuse cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
