In McEwen, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol tests, our extensive network boasts centers throughout all Nationwide cities. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is required. Hair analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

Recently, the trend in drug testing increasingly favors hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests serve zero-tolerance organizations, courts, and probation requirements. Their key advantage is a longer detection period—up to 90 days—through observations that minimize cheating risks. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for monitoring drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term data regarding substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they develop. When clipped near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), and nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis and verification. For tests including EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If head hair is not accessible, an equal quantity of body hair can be utilized. The term 'head hair' specifically refers to hair from the scalp, while 'body hair' includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of determining a drug test result in a laboratory includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning means entering a sample into the laboratory's system. This stage checks that the sample has been sealed and transported correctly, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputs any missing data that wasn't included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary scan for substances that are commonly abused. While Screening is an efficient means to eliminate the possibility of drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation before it holds up legally. Samples found to be presumptively positive during Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for analysis during the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug assessments can spot drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test proves to be quite difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It demonstrates trends of drug usage over time, rather than merely indicating current use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in McEwen, TN, surpasses traditional urine tests with its superior detection capabilities and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis reveals longer drug-use histories, providing a broader scope of detection and reducing the chances of negative results due to sample dilutions or substitutions. This makes hair testing a preferable choice for comprehensive drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

With hair follicle testing, employers in McEwen, TN, gain insight into an individual’s drug history over a more extended period of up to 90 days. This extensive detection window surpasses urine testing, offering a comprehensive overview into an applicant or employee's past substance use. Thus, it furnishes employers with valuable data to make informed hiring or retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in McEwen, TN, offer a robust defense against tampering, almost nullifying the risks of sample adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
