Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Mentor, Tennessee. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, they specialize in this area, with test centers in every city across the nation to conduct the testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed. Hair tests can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, the process for drug testing has increasingly incorporated a hair follicle drug test. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve those with zero-tolerance programs against drug use, judicial bodies, and individuals on probation. The main advantage is a significantly longer detection period for drug use, generally up to 90 days, collected through an observed process, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures long-term usage of substances by embedding markers within the strands as they develop. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal usage patterns for up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing around 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair—ideal for analysis. For EtG, additional panels, or tests beyond 10, 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, equivalent body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Outline of Procedure

The lab drug testing method comprises four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is integrated into the lab's database. This step involves ensuring that the sample is properly sealed/shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry absent in an electronic custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. It is a cost-effective approach to discard drug use for most samples; however, a positive result requires confirmation for court acceptance. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further verification.

With a presumptive positive from Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Drugs in hair are extracted at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for a positive result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are washed before Confirmation if needed. The full lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocol and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Hair drug testing strengths include:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests detect drug use for as long as 90 days, contrasting urine tests with shorter periods.
  • Hard to fake: Due to the difficulty of falsifying a hair test, results tend to be more precise.
  • Offers longitudinal data: Patterns of substance use can be identified over time, unlike short-term detection.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be perceptible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth patterns can influence metabolite levels.

Note: The term "hair follicle test" is a misnomer, as the test examines the strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Mentor, TN, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. The benefits of hair testing include superior detection accuracy and reliability, providing a clearer picture of an individual's drug usage history. While urine tests are common, hair testing surpasses them by retaining traces of substances for longer durations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
