Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mercer, Tennessee. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities in all U.S. cities ready to conduct a hair test. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair tests can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing choices.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over regular urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug-use rules, legal courts, and those on probation. The chief advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection capability, often lasting up to 90 days, using a supervised collection process that is hard to manipulate. Yet, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within immediately past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for substances. Hair is easy to obtain, challenging to falsify, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the desired amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and tests over 10 panels, it's suggested to use 150mg of the specimen. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially integrating a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes other data entry tasks not managed by an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances. It is a cost-effective approach for excluding drug use in most samples, though a positive result needs confirmation for court validity. Samples that test positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If screening results are presumptively positive, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening presents a challenge.

Confirmation for any positive screen results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • High test integrity: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage insights: It illustrates a continuity of drug use over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests are generally more expensive than other testing techniques.
  • Result variances: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can affect the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," it's crucial to note that the analysis targets the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Benefits of Hair vs. Urine Testing in Mercer, TN Hair testing surpasses urine samples in revealing drug usage due to its prolonged detection window. It provides a more comprehensive view of substance habits over time. The dependability of hair testing means fewer false negatives and enhanced accuracy in detecting drug traces, contributing to a robust testing strategy.

Employers and agencies prefer hair testing over urine due to its precise detection of chronic drug use. The extended window offers insights into past substance habits, which urine tests might miss. This heightened accuracy is valuable for maintaining rigorous compliance and ensuring a drug-free work environment.

Extended Detection Window

Extending the Detection Period in Mercer, TN Hair follicle tests excel by providing a longer detection timeline for substance use, up to 90 days. This extensive window lets employers assess an individual's drug history thoroughly, beyond what traditional methods allow. It's a significant advantage for organizations requiring a comprehensive drug history.

The prolonged detection capacity of hair testing offers a longer timeframe to trace drug use, granting employers a broader perspective of an individual's substance habits. By capturing insights across months rather than days, hair testing supports informed decision-making processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Ensuring Test Integrity in Mercer, TN Hair follicle testing is highly resistant to tampering attempts, offering results that are dependable and authentic. Unlike urinary methods, which may be prone to manipulation, hair samples maintain integrity from collection to analysis, providing peace of mind with every test taken.

With its robust resistance to adulteration, hair follicle testing offers an unparalleled level of security in drug testing practices. This ensures confidence in the results, as the process naturally thwarts efforts to compromise the accuracy or authenticity of the test outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
