Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

At Accredited Drug Testing, comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is available in Metropolitan Government, Tennessee. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide that can conduct such tests. Typically, an individual needs 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body for testing. Hair tests are effective for analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in recent times for drug screening. Many employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer this approach over a typical urine test. These tests are utilized by employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation clients. The key advantage is the extended detection window, often up to 90 days, conducted under supervised conditions to minimize the possibility of cheating. For detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the best choice.

What it is, How it works

Assessing drug and alcohol usage through hair testing has emerged as a formidable method. Hair captures long-term data on these substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair offers up to an approximately 90-day detection period for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and hassle-free to transport.

A 1.5-inch collection of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimum amount for testing and verification. For tests like EtG, and additions beyond 10 panels, 150mg is preferable. Measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale is advisable. If head hair is inaccessible, body hair in an equivalent volume can be utilized. "Head hair" implies only scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Review

The crucial steps entailed in laboratory examination for drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Verification.

Accessioning denotes the preliminary handling of a sample into the lab’s inventory. It involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and finalizing any residual data entry absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening consists of an initial prompt inspection for banned substances. Although it's an economical way to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court submission. Any sample indicating a presumptive positive during Screening needs a subsequent confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positives in Screening, more hair is sourced from the original collection for the Extraction phase. In this step, drugs are extracted at a decidedly lower concentration than through other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most intricate technique.

Verification of a positive screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Verification adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can identify up to 90 days of drug use, unlike urine assessments that have a narrower detection period.
  • Cheating deterrent: Tampering with hair drug tests is exceedingly tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Offers trends over time in drug usage, not merely imminent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Not suitable for detecting recent usage: Drugs require about 5-7 days for hair absorption to be measurable.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations tend to be pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair hue and individual growth might influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
