Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Midtown, Tennessee. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair analysis and provide testing facilities in all major cities nationwide. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is typically needed. Hair testing can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent. Various organizations, judicial bodies, and substance abuse professionals now prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers rely on hair tests due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and high resistance to tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair tests has emerged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as the hair grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can indicate substance consumption over a period of up to three months. It is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (around the mass of a #2 pencil), will yield 100mg, which is the peak sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, supplemental tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the hair on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing lab procedure consists of four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial entry of a specimen into a lab's database. It verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes data entry not automatically recorded by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial and swift assessment for drug presence. While screening serves as a cost-effective technique to dismiss drug use in most specimens, a positive result must be confirmed for legal validity. Specimens showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a specimen shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation in the Extraction stage. In this phase, drug compounds are derived from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmatory analysis of any positive screen utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples indicated as presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation where necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair tests can reveal drug consumption for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter timelines.
  • Limited potential for cheating: Cheating in hair drug tests is virtually impractical, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Longitudinal data availability: It reveals drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in the hair in about 5-7 days following consumption.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Individual differences such as hair color and growth rate can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", the examination pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
