At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Millington, Tennessee. Should you require a drug or alcohol analysis using hair samples, our expertise lies in this testing method, with centers available nationwide. A hair sample length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is usually needed. Hair tests accommodate drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

In recent times, there's been an uptick in favoring hair follicle drug tests over traditional methods. This preference is evident among employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals who often opt for hair testing instead of urine analysis. Hair tests appeal due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, monitored collection process, and high resistance to tampering. Despite this, urine tests hold greater accuracy for detecting recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective means to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol consumption for a period of up to three months. Hair is easy to gather, comparatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assays over 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler's scale is suggested for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't present, a proportional amount of body hair can be sourced. Scalp hair refers exclusively to hair from the head. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory's database. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in the majority of cases, a favorable screen must be verified for it to be court-admissible. Specimens that show a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is considered highly complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation when required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the accreditation for ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a limited detection period.
  • Difficulty to falsify: Falsifying a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, which enhances the precision of the results.
  • Historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug consumption patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair and urine drug tests in Millington, TN, hair testing emerges superior due to its broader detection capabilities. Urine tests typically pinpoint recent usage, whereas hair tests provide a longer diagnostic window, signaling usage patterns over months. This makes them ideal for organizations prioritizing comprehensive screening.

The hair follicle test is less prone to manipulation, offering objective results that reinforce employer trust in the testing process. Its expansive timeframe allows for a thorough assessment of an individual's substance use history, an advantage over traditional urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle drug test offers a notable advantage with its extended detection window of up to 90 days, unlike other testing methods. In Millington, TN, this allows employers to gain a fuller picture of an employee's drug usage history beyond recent activities, facilitating better-informed hiring and retention decisions.

This comprehensive look into past substance use gives businesses a stronger foundation for maintaining workplace safety. It serves as an effective tool for monitoring applicants and current employees, thus ensuring a drug-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing significantly minimizes the potential for sample tampering. In Millington, TN, this test is celebrated for its resilience against adulteration attempts. As samples are taken directly from the scalp and observed during collection, the possibility of altering results is considerably reduced, ensuring trustworthy outcomes.

This resistance to tampering makes hair testing a preferred method for those seeking certainty in test results. By providing consistent integrity, companies trust this approach to safeguard their testing processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
