Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mitchellville, Tennessee. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has a specialization in hair testing, with testing centers available in all cities nationwide to facilitate such tests. The typical requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown; alternatively, body hair can be analyzed. Hair testing covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Several employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation regularly use hair follicle tests. One major advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, conducted through an observed and reliable collection process, which is nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, when assessing drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests are still seen as the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair serves as a long-lasting record of substance use, capturing biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When gathered from the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and other drugs used within roughly a 3-month timeframe. It is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp offers 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Summary

There are four primary phases in processing drug test outcomes in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This step verifies that the sample is appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a quick initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Any samples suggesting positivity in Screening need secondary confirmation.

For samples indicating positive results in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Any positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a briefer detection time.
  • Hard to deceive: It's quite difficult to fake a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It can reveal a trend of substance use over time, not simply recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variable outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentrations of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Mitchellville, TN, hair follicle testing is preferred over urine testing due to its superior detection capabilities. Hair tests boast a longer detection window, uncovering substance use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a significantly shorter timeframe. This advantage ensures employers gain a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history, rendering hair tests particularly effective for enforcing zero-tolerance policies in workplaces.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle testing method available in Mitchellville, TN, offers an extended detection window that reaches up to 90 days. This period far surpasses the detection capabilities of traditional urine tests, allowing employers and other stakeholders a more thorough understanding of substance use behavior over an expansive timeframe. Consequently, this testing gives a holistic view of a potential or current employee's drug history, providing invaluable insight into their substance usage patterns.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Mitchellville, TN, the hair follicle drug tests offer a robust, tamper-resistant solution for substance testing. The testing method significantly reduces the risk of sample manipulation, resulting in trustworthy and indisputable results. Since hair samples are difficult to adulterate, the integrity of the test remains intact, offering users the peace of mind that comes from accurate and dependable screenings, crucial for maintaining integrity in sensitive situations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
