Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Moscow, Tennessee. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol through hair analysis, the company specializes in this area and operates numerous centers across the nation capable of performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. The analyses may target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly turned to hair follicle analysis. This shift sees many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts opting for hair drug tests rather than urine tests. These tests are preferred by employers with firm drug-free policies and by legal systems monitoring probationers. The main advantage is an extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, with the process being observed and hard to falsify. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting very recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting substance use. Hair retains long-term indicators of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands. When gathered close to the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month timeframe for identifying substances. Hair collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For extended analyses, such as EtG tests or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. The sample should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be taken. When referencing head hair, it pertains to scalp hair alone; body hair includes all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in processing a drug test result in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for potential drug use. Though a cost-effective means to eliminate drug presence in most cases, a positive screening must be corroborated for credibility in legal contexts. Positive results from Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. This process involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the expertise needed for hair drug tests.

Verification of any positive screening uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Before confirmation, any presumptive positive samples are cleaned as necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards for Hair and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair tests can highlight drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Challenging to subvert: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably tough, enhancing reliability.
  • Chronological data: It offers insights into drug consumption patterns over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are often pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair tone and personal growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
