Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Mount Carmel, Tennessee. Whether you need hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities in all major cities nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from your head or body. Hair tests evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized analysis options.

In the past few years, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for this over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are ideal for employers with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and those in probationary stages. The key advantage is that hair tests identify drug use over an extended duration, typically up to 90 days, are conducted under strict supervision, and are notably hard to deceive. However, urine tests remain more sensitive for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair provides a detection window of up to around three months for both alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, difficult to tamper with, and simple to send for analysis.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We recommend weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equal quantity of body hair is suitable. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This includes verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. It is a cost-effective measure to rule out most drug usage cases; however, a positive screen must be validated for court admissibility. Any presumptively positive samples during Screening do require subsequent confirmation.

For any sample deemed presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair from the original sample is used for Extraction. This step extracts drugs from hair at markedly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection time.
  • Cheating is difficult: It's challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, which enhances result reliability.
  • Historical information: It provides a record of drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs need 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines urine testing in Mount Carmel, TN, in many valuable ways. The long detection window allows for superior identification of drug use, crucial for maintaining strict workplace policies.

Urine tests are more apt for recent drug exposure detection, but hair tests capture a broader drug history, offering a robust and dependable assessment. Employers needing comprehensive analysis prefer hair testing for its higher detection accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
