Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in New Deal, Tennessee. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing excels in these tests, with locations in every major city nationwide equipped to conduct them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific needs.

The adoption of hair follicle drug tests for screening purposes has increased in recent times. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests to traditional urine tests. These tests benefit employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation by offering a 90-day detection period, which is collected through an observed process, minimizing the risk of being tampered with. Nevertheless, for drug usage within the last five days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as a prominent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a longitudinal record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the elongating hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer an up to approximately 90-day detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands of hair (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If hair on the scalp is missing, a comparable amount of body hair may be taken. When referencing head hair, we imply only scalp hair. Body hair pertains to any other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core procedures in the laboratory progression of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This encompasses ensuring that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be admissible legally. Any samples that are potentially positive in Screening do necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is potentially positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a considerably lower concentration than through other techniques (for example, urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging technique to perform.

Verification of any positive screen result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are potentially positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entirety of the laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which possess a briefer detection duration.
  • Challenging to trick: It is notably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can delineate a pattern of drug consumption over a given period, rather than just recent use.

Constraints:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite frequently being termed "hair follicle tests", the test scrutinizes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
