In New Johnsonville, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those needing drug or alcohol testing, our facilities across all cities nationwide specialize in hair sampling. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient. This method can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific analyses of hair.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a favored method for substance screening in recent years. Organizations, legal entities, and addiction specialists are opting for this test over traditional urine tests. These tests cater to employers with strict no-drug policies, legal settings, and those on probation. A major advantage is its extended detection window, often up to 90 days, while being nearly impossible to manipulate, although urine tests remain preferred for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are now recognized as a formidable tool for detecting drugs and alcohol usage. Hair retains a timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When clipped near the scalp, hair offers a detection window for drugs and alcohol extending up to about 3 months. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands, similar in size to a #2 pencil, nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmatory tests. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's suggested to use 150mg of the sample. It's advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler's scale. Where scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test proceeds through four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves introducing a sample into the lab's system. This includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling any additional data gaps not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. It's an economical way to eliminate drug use possibilities for most samples, but a positive screening result must be confirmed to hold up in court. Samples that exhibit a tentative positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show a tentative positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are separated from the hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is considered the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can spot drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
