Accredited Drug Testing provides full-spectrum hair follicle drug testing services in New Providence, Tennessee. For those who require drug or alcohol hair testing, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this method with facilities across the nation equipped to conduct these tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent recently as a method for drug testing. A growing number of employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over urine tests. With employers who enforce strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers, the main advantage of a hair test is a longer drug detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, with minimal chance of tampering. However, for detecting very recent use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended overview of alcohol and drug usage by incorporating biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeline of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be sourced. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps involved in the laboratory assessment of a drug screening result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This entails confirming that the specimen was securely sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening involves an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in the majority of specimens, a positive screen needs to be validated to be accepted in legal settings. All samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than through other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are washed before confirmation if needed. The full laboratory process, spanning Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug analyses can reveal drug usage for a duration reaching up to 90 days, unlike urine analyses which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to tamper with: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug analysis, enhancing the accuracy of the findings.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a trajectory of drug intake over a timeframe, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Even though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
