Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Nolensville, Tennessee. If you need a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in these tests and have centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair samples can be analyzed for different substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard method. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair testing over traditional urine tests. With a focus on zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation cases, the key advantage of hair testing is its longer detection period—up to 90 days. It's conducted in an observed process and is hard to tamper with, whereas urine tests remain most effective for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures comprehensive biomarker history within its growing strands. When procured near the scalp, hair offers a detection range of about three months for substances like alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to adulteration, and can be easily transported.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil) near the scalp typically yields 100mg of hair, optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, and additional tests surpassing 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Measuring the specimen with a jeweler's scale is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair is suitable. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" includes other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Laboratory drug test processing encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample within the laboratory system. This involves ensuring the sample's secure sealing and shipment, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a rapid preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective means to exclude drug usage in most instances, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be legally admissible. Any Screening samples deemed presumptively positive require further verification.

For samples marked presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity involved in hair drug screening.

The Confirmation step for positive screening outcomes is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing pre-confirmation, if necessary. The entire laboratory workflow, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug screenings identify substance use spanning up to 90 days, offering a longer window than urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing test accuracy.
  • Chronological data provision: Hair tests reveal a timeline of drug usage, rather than recent consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of immediate detection: Detectability in hair emerges roughly 5-7 days post-substance intake.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Despite commonly being termed "hair follicle tests", analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
