In Norma, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services. For those requiring drug or alcohol screening via hair tests, our centers, located across every city nationwide, are ready to assist. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. With these samples, analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized tests are possible.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction in drug testing protocols. Rather than the conventional urine test, judges, employers, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests. This method suits organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, probationers, and legal settings. Its advantage lies in its ability to trace up to 90 days of drug usage, performed under supervision and being virtually fraud-proof. Yet, for detecting substance use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. It captures biomarkers within the growing hair strand fibers, providing a long-term record of alcohol and drugs. A sample taken near the scalp can offer roughly a three-month window for detecting drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, a bit tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of approximately 200 strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for screening and confirmatory tests. For EtG, add-ons, or tests above 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. It's advised to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers to scalp hair solely; "body hair" includes other hair types like facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. It involves verifying proper sealing and shipping, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary check for substance abuse. While it economically helps eliminate drug use on most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for court acceptance. Presumptive positives from Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and processed for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations from hair than from other tests like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening the most challenging technique.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned as needed before confirmation. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus results are more reliable.
  • Displays historical usage: It shows a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result differences: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
