Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Norris, Tennessee. If obtaining a hair drug or alcohol test is essential, our expertise in this area, with numerous centers Nationwide, ensures seamless testing. Typically, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Our tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options tailored to your needs.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for substance detection. Mandated by many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, this method is increasingly replacing traditional urine tests, especially among zero-tolerance employers and in probation assessments. Its advantage lies in detecting drug use over a 90-day period, collected under observation, rendering tampering nearly impossible. However, for recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests still hold the upper hand.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by locking in biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can indicate drug or alcohol use for up to roughly three months. Collection is straightforward, altering is challenging, and transportation is convenient.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, additional checks, and/or tests beyond ten panels, a quantity of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug sample include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory's system, ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the initial quick evaluation for drug presence. While Screening is efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples showing preliminary positive results in Screening need further verification.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging.

Any positive screening outcome is validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are laundered before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection frame: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers usage history: It can showcase a pattern of drug use over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
