In Northeast Wilson, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Our nationwide centers, including those locally accessible, are equipped to conduct these tests, ideal when you possess 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body. Hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options tailored to your needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence as a preferred method in recent years. Employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probation officers, often opt for hair testing over urine tests. The key advantage lies in its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, and the difficulty to tamper with the test. For recent drug use detection within the last five days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an efficient method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair effectively records an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length with approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key four steps in laboratory drug test processing comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. While it's an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to hold in court. Any samples returning a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples yielding a presumptive positive are cleaned before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests have the capability to identify drug use for up to 90 days, which exceeds the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: The cost of hair drug tests is generally higher than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Northeast Wilson, TN, several benefits stand out. Hair tests boast higher accuracy and are less susceptible to adulteration, ensuring more reliable results. The extended detection window also sets hair testing apart, providing a comprehensive overview of substance use over up to 90 days.

One significant advantage hair tests hold over urine examinations is their robustness against tampering. Due to their nature, hair samples are less likely to be manipulated, offering a truer reflection of substance usage. This characteristic makes hair follicle tests a more reliable choice in environments where accuracy is imperative.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Northeast Wilson, TN, provides an extended detection window that spans up to 90 days. This capability allows employers to garner a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history over time, surpassing the limitations of other testing methods. Such extended detection is vital for thorough pre-employment screenings and ongoing assessments.

Accessing a detailed history of substance use is invaluable, and the longer detection period offered by hair follicle tests in Northeast Wilson is unmatched. Employers can evaluate applicants and employees with confidence, assured of the 90-day history of substance exposure, aiding in better-informed hiring decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The resilience against tampering makes hair follicle tests a top choice in Northeast Wilson, TN. Unlike other methods, the risk of altering or adulterating hair samples is significantly minimized, resulting in reliable and unquestionable results. For employers and institutions, this translates to trust in the integrity of the testing process.

With hair follicle testing, the concerns of sample adulteration shrink dramatically. The method's design inherently reduces opportunities for manipulation, ensuring the results are accurate and dependable. In high-stakes environments, such as court-mandated testing or workplace policies, this feature is invaluable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
