In Oakdale, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers efficient and thorough hair follicle drug testing. If you're in need of a hair-related drug or alcohol evaluation, our specialty lies in hair assessments, boasting centers across every city in the nation ready to facilitate such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required, with respective analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options available.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular for substance detection. Employers, judicial entities, and addiction professionals lean towards hair tests over traditional urine screens. These tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies and for probation checks due to their long detection span, up to 90 days, and observed collection process which makes them difficult to cheat. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an essential method for identifying substance use. Hair can offer a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, it can provide a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Collect a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil diameter) closest to the scalp to achieve a 100mg hair sample, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, extra tests, or beyond a 10-panel test, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advisable to use a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not an option, the equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Scalp hair refers specifically to the hair on the head, while body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result is comprised of four primary processes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where the sample is logged into the lab's system. This involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment to check for drug abuse. While it's a cost-efficient method to identify drug usage in most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample has a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique.

For confirming a positive screening result, methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can reveal drug use history for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Cheating is difficult: It's extremely hard to tamper with a hair test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Shows usage history: Offers an overview of drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
