Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Olivet, Tennessee. When a hair or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and operates testing centers in cities nationwide to perform these tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is necessary. Hair analysis can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug testing. An increasing number of employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now mandate hair drug tests instead of the conventional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and individuals on probation. This method's primary advantage is its extended detection window for drug use, up to 90 days, with samples collected in a supervised process, making tampering nearly impossible. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and drug exposure by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the extending hair strand. When obtained from the area nearest to the scalp, hair may offer up to a nearly three-month period of detection for alcohol and different drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It’s suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it strictly refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process for a drug test result consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary entry of a sample into the lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in the majority of specimens, a positive outcome requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

When a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can perceive drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Cheating is challenging: It is extremely hard to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a record of drug usage over a time frame, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting immediate use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair coloration and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the scalp-embedded follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Olivet, TN, hair follicle testing demonstrates clear advantages over urine tests. The extended detection period and difficulty in manipulation makes hair testing more trustworthy. While urine tests detect recent usage, hair tests offer a broader timeline, giving a clear view of an individual’s substance history.

Hair testing is ideal for maintaining a drug-free environment, especially for those needing comprehensive screenings. Urine tests may miss long-term patterns due to their limited scope.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Olivet, TN offers a robust detection window of up to 90 days. This method empowers employers to gain a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s substance use history, beyond recent consumption.

Such an extensive timeframe ensures that any habitual patterns are evident, enhancing the effectiveness of workplace drug policies. This type of testing is not just accurate, but insightful, prioritizing long-term employee health and safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Olivet, TN, hair follicle tests greatly mitigate the risk of sample tampering. The collection process is directly observed, reducing the opportunities for switching or adulterating samples.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
