Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Orlinda, Tennessee. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with testing centers across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, hair from the crown measuring 1.5 to 2 inches or body hair can be used. Hair tests are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or for other tailored testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle testing is becoming a more common method for drug screening. Numerous employers, judicial courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over typical urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, by courts, and by probation officers. A hair follicle drug test stands out due to its extended detection window, typically 90 days, observed collection process, and reduced risk of foul play. However, urine tests are still considered the best for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a chronological record of alcoholic and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for up to about 3 months. It is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be obtained. When we mention head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential steps in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of initially processing a sample within a lab’s system. This process involves confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not available in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening pertains to a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers an economical approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample proves positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and organized for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration relative to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the heightened complexity of hair drug screening.

Verification of any initial positive result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug screenings are capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Tough to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Supplies usage history: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs only become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Diverse results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests," this test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
