Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle testing services in Ozone, Tennessee. If you're looking for hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing with facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has gained more prominence in drug testing methodologies. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests serve organizations with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and probation scenarios. The main advantage of hair testing is the extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, observation during collection, and is challenging to tamper with. However, for recent drug use, urine tests are most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of drug and alcohol usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drug presence. Collecting hair is straightforward, it is somewhat resistant to tampering, and can be easily transported.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of around 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. For head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into the laboratory’s system. This includes verifying that the sample has been properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive results require confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need a second confirmation.

If a specimen tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, more hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Any presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical information: It provides a drug use pattern over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incipient use undetectable: Detection in hair takes around 5-7 days post-ingestion.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur greater costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Individual factors, such as hair color and hair growth variations, can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", these tests assess the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
