In Petersburg, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing excels in comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair analysis stands out, with facilities distributed across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. A variety of substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, can be assessed through these tests.

Over recent years, drug testing procedures have increasingly incorporated hair follicle methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle analysis suits organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationed individuals. Its key advantage is a longer detection window, reaching up to 90 days, nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting drugs used within the recent 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains markers from these substances within its strands, offering a comprehensive timeline. When sampled proximate to the scalp, hair enables detection of substances up to nearly 90 days. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy for shipping purposes.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp achieves 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for analysis. In cases of EtG tests, extended panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. Measurement should be conducted using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test samples consists of four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails entering a sample into the lab's system. It involves ensuring the sample's packaging and transport were done securely, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data that is not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves conducting a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. Although a cost-efficient method to exclude many samples from drug use, any positive result from the Screening phase must be confirmed for judicial acceptance. Samples tentatively positive during Screening necessitate additional Confirmation.

When a sample might test positive in the Screening phase, more hair is selected from the original batch for Extraction. In this step, substances are isolated from hair in concentrations significantly lesser than other testing types (e.g., urine or saliva). This unique aspect makes hair testing notably challenging.

Positive results from the Screening phase are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS processes. All presumptive positives are cleaned prior to Confirmation as needed. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Detects substances up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter spans.
  • Cheating is tough: It is significantly tougher to deceive a hair drug test, adding to its reliability.
  • Chronicles usage history: Can map chronic consumption patterns across time, as opposed to recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Generally pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variance: Drug metabolite levels in hair might vary due to differences in hair color and personal growth rates.

Note: Frequently called “hair follicle tests”, the analysis targets the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
