Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Pleasant Hill, Tennessee. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in hair evaluations, with centers available in all cities nationwide equipped to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. Hair evaluations can be tested for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair testing requirements.

Recently, the approach to drug screening increasingly incorporates hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over conventional urine analyses. Those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, alongside court systems and probationers, use hair follicle evaluations. Their key advantage lies in detecting substance usage over a lengthier interval of up to 90 days, with direct collection reducing chances of manipulation. However, for evaluating recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains the most definitive.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair provides a detailed record of substance use by retaining biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximately 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the head yields 100mg, which is the preferred amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, extras, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in managing a laboratory drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves recognizing a sample within a lab's systems. This step confirms the appropriate sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding information not submitted via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial analysis for drug usage. While it is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug presence in most samples, a confirmed result is needed for legal purposes. Any samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening require additional validation.

During Extraction, if a sample tests positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample for processing. In this phase, chemicals are extracted from the hair at lower levels compared to other techniques like urine or saliva, which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screen findings is done with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that tentatively test positive are sanitized prior to validation as necessary. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP's Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis detects substance use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter durations.
  • Hard to tamper with: It is significantly challenging to affect hair drug test results, thereby increasing accuracy.
  • Provides ongoing data: It reveals a history of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are generally pricier than other types.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
