Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Poplar Top, Tennessee. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we operate testing centers across all cities in the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is suitable for this test. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer a hair drug test over the typical urine test. These tests are particularly favored by those with strict drug-free policies, the judiciary, and probation cases. Hair tests offer a distinct advantage—a longer detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, with minimal risk of tampering. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair delivers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When samples are collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hairs (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab handling of a drug test sample are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial introduction of a sample into a lab’s database. This process ensures the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for abusive substances. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug consumption for the bulk of samples, any positive results require confirmation for court admissibility. All samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection window.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat on, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a pattern of drug use over time, not limited to current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and unique hair growth rates might influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
