Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair strand drug testing services in Powell, Tennessee. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol assessment via hair, look no further. We are experts in such tests and maintain facilities across the country that handle hair analyses. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be examined. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other bespoke testing options.

In recent times, the hair follicle method has increasingly been chosen for drug evaluations. Employers, the justice system, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer it over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by those upholding a strict no-drug policy, legal courts, and individuals under probation. The key virtue is its extended detection span for drug activities, typically up to 90 days, monitored during an observed collection, making it very hard to deceive. Nevertheless, for recent substance use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The evaluation of drugs and alcohol through hair sampling is increasingly recognized as an effective approach. Hair preserves a comprehensive record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers. When hair is cut close to the scalp, it can offer an approximate detection span of three months for alcohol and drugs. The hair collection process is straightforward, presents challenges for tampering, and facilitates easy transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximating the circumference of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, essential for screening and confirmatory analysis. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is preferred. Measuring the specimen with a jeweler's scale is advised. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes an initial processing stage in the laboratory system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry missing from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary examination for drug presence. While efficient in ruling out drug use for the majority, any positive outcome from Screening necessitates confirmation before being considered acceptable for legal purposes. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a presumptive positive is detected in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most complex to execute.

Confirmation of positive results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and follows the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection range.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Because it is hard to manipulate a hair drug test, the results tend to be more precise.
  • Tracks usage history: It can illustrate patterns of drug use over time, going beyond recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as the color of hair and individual differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
