Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Powell Valley, Tennessee. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our specialization is in hair testing, with testing centers available across all U.S. cities capable of performing such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair analyses can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific test selections.

In recent times, drug testing practices have increasingly involved hair follicle analyses. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists often prefer a hair drug evaluation over traditional urine assessments. Such tests are ideal for employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probation individuals. The chief advantage lies in the extended detection period of up to 90 days, under monitored collection, rendering them nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, urine analyses remain superior for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly acknowledged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, allowing for a prolonged tracking of alcohol and drug use. When hair is sampled close to the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month usage history for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair samples is simple, it’s relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil’s thickness), will yield 100mg of hair, deemed optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. Measuring the specimen’s weight using a jeweler’s scale is advisable. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair is a suitable alternative. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four key processes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into a lab’s system. This phase ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputs additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug use. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, legally approving a positive screen requires confirmation. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Upon presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentration levels than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive outcome in Screening is pursued via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The complete lab process, starting from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days earlier, unlike urine tests with a more limited detection time frame.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It can chart drug use trends over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing tends to incur more expense than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Powell Valley, TN is evident due to its superior detection capabilities. Hair testing offers a longer detection window, unlike traditional urine tests, making it a more effective method for assessing historical substance use.

While urine tests can capture recent drug use, hair tests ensure a comprehensive view over months. This longer detection period demonstrates why hair tests are a better alternative for those seeking dependable and robust detection methods.

Extended Detection Window

In Powell Valley, TN, hair follicle testing boasts an extended detection window of up to 90 days. This period provides employers with a thorough understanding of an individual's substance history.

The significance of this extended detection window ensures that employers have a comprehensive view of a candidate or employee's drug use history, allowing for informed hiring and retention decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
