Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Prospect, Tennessee. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair analysis is unmatched. With testing centers throughout the country, including every city Nationwide, a hair sample from the crown of your head or body, typically 1.5 to 2 inches long, can be analyzed for various substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG.

In recent times, the preference for drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle methods. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, court systems, and individuals on probation favor hair follicle testing due to its extensive detection period of up to 90 days, transparent collection process, and resistance to tampering. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the advancing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer roughly up to a 3-month periods for detecting alcohol and drug presence. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing that exceeds 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar amount of body hair may be used. “Head hair” refers exclusively to scalp hair, while “body hair” encompasses other types (e.g., facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the fundamental processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, providing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for drug abuse indicators. While it serves as a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive indication requires further confirmation to hold up in legal procedures. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is taken and made ready for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at concentrations significantly lower than those used in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection periods: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Tough to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a record of drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Roughly 5-7 days are required for drugs to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," this method evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
