In Quebeck, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether a hair drug or alcohol screening is needed, our expertise in hair evaluation is supported by testing locations in cities across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are necessary. Hair can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for detecting drug use in the past few years. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now often opt for them over traditional urine tests. Used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers, the main advantage is the extended 90-day drug detection period, offering observed collections and being notably hard to tamper with. Yet, for drug use screening within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an influential method for detecting substance use. It captures a comprehensive history of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair strand. When obtained close to the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month period for identifying alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical stages in the lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Though Screening is an economical tactic to negate drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening must undergo subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Any positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples receive a preliminary wash before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection timeline.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a usage pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing strategies.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
