Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Red Bank, Tennessee. If hair drug or alcohol tests are needed, we are experts in this method, with nationwide testing centers ready to conduct these tests. Generally, a minimum length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing solutions.
Lately, hair follicle testing has gained prominence in drug screening methods. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals commonly opt for it. The advantage of this test is its ability to detect drug usage over a longer span—up to 90 days—and it employs an observed collection process, minimizing cheating risks. However, for recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain more accurate.

The method of hair testing is now regarded as a potent means to uncover the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a longitudinal record of alcohol and other drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strand's fibers as it grows. When obtained from near the scalp, hair can offer almost a 90-day detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient for transportation.
A sample of about 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirming results. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panels, it's advised to use 150mg of hair. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the hair sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we refer explicitly to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The processing of a drug test result in the laboratory includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning covers the initial sample preparation for the lab’s system, ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, attributing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody.
Screening performs a preliminary test for drug misuse. Screening is economical for ruling out drug use in most samples; however, a positive screen needs confirmation for court acceptability. Any sample showing a presumptive positive result in Screening requires secondary confirmation.
Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging technique to carry out.
Confirmation follows any positive screening result via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory journey from Accessioning through Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
