Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rickman, Tennessee. For any needs related to hair or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair sample analysis with testing facilities located throughout all major cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for testing. Hair samples can be tested for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, using hair follicle tests for drug screening has become more common. This shift includes many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals preferring hair over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation individuals. The key advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, paired with an observed collection process, making manipulation quite challenging. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for determining drug use in the very recent past (within 5 days).

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively challenging to adulterate, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both preliminary analysis and confirmation. For EtG, supplements, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be collected. By "head hair," we specifically mean scalp hair. "Body hair" pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step entails verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, applying a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive Screening requires confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than through alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening presents the highest complexity.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to Confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeline: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more restricted detection period.
  • Difficult to evade: Evading a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over an extended period, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are generally more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair coloration and individual hair growth discrepancies can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Rickman, TN, surpasses traditional urine testing, offering better detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests have limited detection windows, hair tests examine longer histories. This gives employers a more complete view of an individual’s substance use, making it a superior choice for ongoing assessments of employee compliance.

Extended Detection Window

The extensive detection window of hair follicle testing in Rickman, TN captures drug use over up to 90 days. This advantage allows employers to view a comprehensive timeline of an individual’s substance habits, aiding in more informed employment decisions and a thorough understanding of an employee's history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Rickman, TN's hair follicle testing method is highly tamper-resistant. With a process that minimizes the risk of sample adulteration, it provides results that are both reliable and unquestionable. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
