In Rocky Fork, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive services in hair follicle drug testing. If a hair or alcohol test is what you need, we are specialists in hair testing and can provide services in cities nationwide. You must have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the crown of your head or body as applicable. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

Lately, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more popular for conducting drug tests. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer it over the typical urine test. Hair tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies and by courts for probation checks. The key advantage is a more extended detection window of up to 90 days, making it difficult to manipulate, whereas urine tests are optimal for screening substances within a recent 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a substantial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When harvested close to the scalp, hair can present nearly a 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment, roughly 200 strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encapsulates all other hair variations (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's protocol. This involves validating that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid inspection for drugs. Although Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive screening warrants confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most intricate technique to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests which have a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably hard to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides a historical account: It offers a record of drug use over a timeframe, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair within 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Aspects like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests. In Rocky Fork, TN, this method is favored for its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
