Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Saint Bethlehem, Tennessee. If you require a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing, along with our nationwide network of test centers, ensures you can easily access a test. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body for analysis. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and is adaptable for other customized needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in the drug testing process. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts are now favoring hair analysis over traditional urine samples. Hair tests are adopted by employers with strict drug policies, the court system, or individuals under probation. One notable advantage of hair testing is its extended three-month detection window, which is monitored directly and is nearly foolproof. Yet, urine tests remain precise for drug activities within five days prior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drugs through encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and other drug use for up to about a 3-month period. Hair is straightforward to gather, moderately challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet encompassing approximately 200 hair strands (roughly as thick as a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory's system. This involves checking that the sample was sealed and dispatched appropriately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid test for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage from most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample results as presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning through to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drugs for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It's exceedingly tough to falsify a hair drug test, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can showcase a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
