In Sharps Chapel, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing and has locations nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the scalp or body. Hair testing can analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has been increasingly chosen for drug testing over urine testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests, which are utilized in zero-tolerance workplaces, legal settings, and probation situations. A key advantage of hair tests is their longer drug detection window (up to 90 days), making them hard to cheat. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can provide a detection window of nearly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For enhanced testing such as EtG or panels beyond 10, 150mg of hair is advised. It's suggested that the sample be measured on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair is suitable. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test sample consist of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary integration of the sample into the lab's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was sealed and sent appropriately, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails a preliminary check for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any presumptive positive samples necessitate further confirmation.

If the Screening stage indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of positive Screening findings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests may register drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more restricted window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage history: It offers a record of drug consumption patterns over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternate testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
