Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Southwest Nolichucky, Tennessee. Specializing in hair-based drug and alcohol evaluations, we have numerous centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Our hair analyses can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer personalized testing choices.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more popular method for detection. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists often prefer it to urine testing. These tests help organizations with strict anti-drug policies, legal authorities, and those on probation. Their main advantage is a longer detection period—up to 90 days—along with a secure collection, minimizing chances of tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain optimal for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a highly effective means for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair serves as a comprehensive record of substance consumption, capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, moderately resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it is specifically about scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The testing process in the lab involves four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addressing any additional data input that’s not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the preliminary evaluation for prevalent drugs. Though Screening effectively rules out substance use for the majority of samples, any positive findings must be authenticated for legal proceedings. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug tests.

Confirmation of any positive from screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assays can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine assays have a shorter range.
  • Cheating difficulty: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Trends in substance use: It offers insights into drug usage patterns over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can alter drug metabolite levels.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests," the evaluation focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
