Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in St. Joseph, Tennessee. For hair or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair tests spans across the nation with facilities in every city to conduct these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair tests can check for substances like drugs and alcohol/ETG or be customized for various analyses.

Over recent years, hair follicle tests have become a prevalent choice for drug screenings. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists opt for this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies and probation cases benefit from hair tests, which detect substance use for a much longer duration, typically up to 90 days. However, for identifying recent drug use within a five-day window, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. By collecting hair near the scalp, one can attain a detection period of approximately three months for substances like alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (resembling a #2 pencil’s diameter) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise determining the weight of the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be insufficient, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. The term "head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. In contrast, "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample within a lab's framework, ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a rapid assessment for drugs of concern. Though Screening is an economical means to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples indicating a potential positive result during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a potential positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is one of the more challenging methodologies to execute.

Any verified positive results from screening undergo Confirmation through techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as deemed necessary. The overall laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is subject to examination under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can ascertain substance use over a span of 90 days, surpassing urine tests with more limited detection periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: The difficulty in manipulating hair drug tests enhances the reliability of the results.
  • Historic substance usage data: This method provides insight into drug use patterns over an extended timeframe, not limited to immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes a period of approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Results variability: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the accumulation of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," this testing evaluates the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
