Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right in Stanton, Tennessee. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities available in cities across the country to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing solutions.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a standard method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This testing method serves workplaces with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. A key advantage is its ability to detect drug use over an extended period, typically up to 90 days, making it hard to falsify, whereas urine tests remain the best choice for recent substance use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. It captures a prolonged record of such use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When hair is extracted near the scalp, it offers a detection timeline stretching up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximate thickness of a #2 pencil), near the scalp yields a 100mg sample: an optimal quantity for assessments and confirmations. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Measuring the sample with a jeweler's scale is suggested. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab system. This process includes ensuring the sample's seal and shipping integrity, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, positive results must be confirmed in order to be accepted legally. Samples with presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that are considered presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation, when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests' shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological data: Offers insights into drug usage patterns over an extended period, beyond immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to have a higher cost compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
