Offering thorough hair follicle drug testing in Summertown, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing is prepared to assist with any hair or alcohol testing needs. As experts in hair testing, we have locations nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customizable options.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in recent years as a preferred method for drug screening. This type of test is often chosen by employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse professionals over urine tests. It's favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and for probation monitoring. A significant advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, conducted through an observed process, making it hard to tamper. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Acknowledged for its efficiency, hair testing serves as an invaluable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, it captures a comprehensive chronicle of substance use. Hair sampled near the scalp offers an approximate detection period of three months for drugs and alcohol. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

For optimal analysis, a 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) should be sourced near the scalp, providing 100mg, the preferred amount for both testing and validation. When considering EtG, additional tests or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In instances where scalp hair is unobtainable, an identical quantity of body hair might be utilized. References to head hair exclusively pertain to scalp hair, whereas body hair signifies all other categories (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. This entails confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary data not specified by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening constitutes a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. It is a cost-effective measure to exclude drug use across most samples; however, a positive screening result must be verified to be permissible in legal proceedings. All samples with an initial positive indication during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample to be prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid testing, underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

The Confirmation process for any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, all presumed positive samples undergo necessary washing. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect substance use for as long as 90 days, outperforming urine tests with shorter detection scopes.
  • Cheat-resistant: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical patterns: It traces a longitudinal pattern of drug use instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs versus other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rate can influence metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand above the scalp, not the follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
