Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Toone, Tennessee. Our expertise in hair and alcohol testing is unparalleled, with centers nationwide ready for service. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically required, though body hair is an alternative. Our hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained momentum as the preferred choice over urine testing. It's favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, particularly those upholding strict no-drug policies. The test's main advantage is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, offering an observed, tamper-proof procedure. However, for detecting recent use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations are progressively recognized as an effective approach for detecting substance and alcohol intake. Hair stores a long-term record of alcohol and narcotics by embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present up to a roughly 3-month period of detection for both alcohol and narcotics. Hair is easily collected, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, extra testing, and/or analysis beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. The term 'head hair' specifically pertains to scalp hair. 'Body hair' refers to all other hair varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The key procedures in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the introductory processing of a specimen into a laboratory's framework. This encompasses ensuring the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry not given by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening implies a preliminary quick assessment for substance misuse. Even though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result from the screening must be confirmed to be legally admissible. Any sample presumed positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration than seen in other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug assessment the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug exams can identify substance use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug exam is quite challenging, rendering the outcomes more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It supplies a drug use pattern over a timeline, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are necessary for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
