Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug analyses in Trimble, Tennessee. Whether for drug or alcohol detection, our expertise in hair-based assessments is supported by testing facilities across all U.S. cities. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from your scalp, or alternatively, body hair may be used. Hair tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent times. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance professionals now opt for hair tests rather than conventional urine tests. These tests suit employers enforcing stringent no-drug policies and legal systems. Their appeal lies in an extensive detection window of up to 90 days and the challenges of tampering, but for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests reign in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of each growing strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and can be easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests above 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a comparable quantity of body hair should be gathered. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in laboratory processing of a drug test comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial entry into the lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional information not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts an expedited analysis of potential drug misuse. Though Screening is cost-efficient for disqualifying drug use across most samples, a positive indication must be authenticated to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate secondary validation.

Should Screening yield a presumptive positive, further hair is taken from the starting specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug testing as the most challenging method to execute.

Positive results from screening are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, all samples testing presumptively positive undergo washing as appropriate. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use extending up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to manipulate: The accuracy of hair drug tests is higher due to the difficulty in falsifying results.
  • Delivers historical patterns: It provides insights into a chronology of drug use, rather than just recent occurrences.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is of the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
