Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening for residents in Washburn, Tennessee. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair examinations, with testing sites located throughout the country, which includes hair testing services. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing procedures increasingly incorporate the hair follicle method. A number of employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are mandating hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle examinations are preferred by employers with strict anti-drug guidelines, judicial systems, and probation services. The key advantage of this test is its extended detection timeframe—up to 90 days—and its observed collection reduces tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol usage. Through embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair, it displays an extended drug and alcohol usage history. When collected near the roots, hair can reveal a usage history over roughly three months for substances and alcohol. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, considered an ideal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and beyond 10-panel evaluations, an amount of 150mg is advised. Use a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used instead. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment of a drug test outcome comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves an initial sample process within a lab's setup. This encompasses confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing further required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary evaluation for substance misuse. Despite being cost-efficient and useful for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmer evaluation for legal substantiation. Any samples registering potentially positive in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

If Screening indicates a potential positive sample, additional hair is drawn from the initial specimen for Extraction. Here, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis notably intricate to conduct.

Any positive screening outcome undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples registering potential positivity are cleansed prior to required confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is rigorously assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments reveal substance usage for up to 90 days, contrasting with the shorter detection window of urine assessments.
  • Tampering is challenging: Tampering with a hair drug assessment is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Demonstrates usage history: Offers a longitudinal view of substance use, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug assessments tend to cost more than alternate testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Often mistakenly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
