Accredited Drug Testing provides all-inclusive hair follicle drug assessments in Welchland, Tennessee. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, our specialty is hair testing, accessible in all cities nationwide for test conduction. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed. Hair examinations can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized possibilities.

Recently, drug testing approaches have increasingly incorporated hair follicle examinations. Numerous employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over urine assessments. Hair follicle evaluations cater to employers with stringent drug policies. The main advantage lies in the longer detection window of up to 90 days and near-impossible tampering. However, urine tests are still optimal for detecting most recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair contains a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 hairs (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. It's advisable to measure the specimen on a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core phases in processing a drug test result in a laboratory context include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary intake of a sample into the laboratory system, checking that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data input not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening provides a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use in most samples; however, a positive result requires further confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples suggested to be positive in Screening require an additional confirmation stage.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is the toughest method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as warranted. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests track drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which exhibit a shorter detection time.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It reveals usage patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to track recent usage: Detection in hair requires about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug traces in the hair.

Note: Despite being referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Welchland, TN, surpasses urine tests by providing wider detection of drug use, making it highly reliable. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
