In West Bradley, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analysis for drug use. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our hair testing services are available in centers across the nation. Suitable samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body, providing options to evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made tests.

Today, hair follicle testing has become increasingly popular for drug screening, often preferred over the traditional urine test by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. Employers, in particular, adopt this method due to its zero-tolerance compliance, longer detection period of up to 90 days, and near-impossibility to tamper. However, for identifying recent substance use within five days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as an influential method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can offer a lengthy overview of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively tough to tamper, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advised. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process entails verifying the sample’s correct sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial expedited assessment for drug abuse. Screening offers a cost-efficient means to rule out drug usage in most samples, yet any positive screen must undergo confirmation for court admissibility. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial batch and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is among the most intricate methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screen result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation when required. The entire lab process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection range.
  • Resistant to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably challenging, leading to more precise results.
  • Unveils historical usage: Offers insights into drug patterns over time, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

West Bradley, TN, shows a preference for hair tests over traditional urine assays due to the former’s remarkable detection accuracy. Hair tests surpass urine tests by offering more robust findings across a wide timeframe. As such, hair testing provides greater assurance in identifying long-term substance misuse, outshining urine tests in most screening scenarios.

Extended Detection Window

Incorporating an extended detection window, hair follicle screening allows West Bradley, TN employers a comprehensive glance up to 90 days back. This feature grants companies insights into ongoing and past drug use patterns of potential hires or current staff, fostering a safer working environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
