Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in West Shiloh, TN. For those requiring a substance or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing, with centers located across the country to conduct such assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific detection needs.

In recent times, using hair follicle tests for drug detection has risen in popularity. Employers, the judiciary, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair analyses over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by those with strict no-drug policies, the legal system, and probation officers. The main advantage of hair tests lies in their ability to detect drug usage over a 90-day span, which is nearly impossible to falsify, although urine tests remain best for recent use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases a prolonged history of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the hair strand as it grows. When acquired near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month time frame for alcohol and drug detection. Hair is easy to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, or tests with more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equal amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial processing of a sample within a lab’s framework. This encompasses verifying whether the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data inputs absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial expedited review for illegal drug use. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires verification to be admissible in legal settings. Samples considered positive in Screening necessitate a further confirmation step.

When a sample is considered positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other procedures (like urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most challenging approach to perform.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo a cleaning procedure before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is very challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use across a timeframe, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher expenses than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
