In Whitwell, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments. For those needing hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in these tests, with centers available in cities nationwide. Typically, an individual needs about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body for testing. Our hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer custom testing options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in the realm of drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair analysis over standard urine tests. This type of test appeals to employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and individuals under probation. A major advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period, up to 90 days, and its collection process being nearly foolproof. Yet, for more recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, it can indicate usage for up to approximately 90 days. Hair is easy to collect, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands resembling a #2 pencil’s thickness, yields 100mg of hair, optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and tests over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale for precision is advisable. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair is an alternative. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial step of sample integration into a lab’s system, including checking the seal and shipment integrity, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry absent from a digital chain of custody system.

Screening implies an initial examination for drug traces. Although Screening offers a cost-saving approach to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive finding must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening demand secondary validation.

Should a sample be preliminarily positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is retrieved from the initial specimen for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than via other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing is notably challenging.

Confirmation for any positive screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily positive undergo a wash before confirmation as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Limited tampering possibilities: Avoiding manipulation of a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers usage patterns: It reveals drug use tendencies over time rather than immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Variable results: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
